Kolkata, The faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamata Banerjee on Monday unveiled a new party logo featuring a football player, its interim election symbol, as it begins preparations to establish a fresh electoral identity.
The new logo carries the words “Mamata All India Trinamool Congress” in white against a blue background, with a football player prominently placed at the centre. The design also incorporates saffron, white and green elements. The party has asked its leaders and elected representatives to publicise the new symbol among voters.
The development follows an interim decision by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to prevent the rival factions from using the original “All India Trinamool Congress” name and its reserved “Flowers and Grass” symbol amid an internal dispute over control of the party.
The ECI subsequently allotted the Mamata Banerjee-led faction the name “Mamata All India Trinamool Congress” and the Football Player symbol. The rival faction was allotted the name “Democratic Trinamool Congress” and the Envelope symbol. The arrangements are interim and relate to the upcoming electoral process while the underlying dispute remains subject to further determination.
The new identity assumes particular importance ahead of the upcoming West Bengal by-elections, with both factions set to contest under their respective names and symbols. The Election Commission has also treated the two groups as recognised political parties in West Bengal, Meghalaya and Tripura under the interim arrangement.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has challenged the ECI’s interim order in the Supreme Court, and the court has agreed to urgently list the matter. The legal proceedings could have a bearing on the continuing dispute over the party’s name and traditional election symbol.
