Srinagar: The Jammu & Kashmir Food & Drugs Administration has imposed an immediate Union Territory-wide ban on the sale, storage, distribution and display of specific batches of four ghee brands after laboratory testing found them non-compliant with prescribed food safety standards.
The action follows samples collected by Food Safety Officers from Anantnag, Jammu, Kathua, Samba and Pulwama and tested at the National Food Laboratory, Ghaziabad, and Food Testing Laboratory, Srinagar. The reports found the affected products to be Unsafe, Sub-standard or Misbranded, as applicable.
Four brands under the scanner
The prohibited batches are:
- Cow Ghee Milk Bite — declared Sub-standard
- Pehalwan — declared Unsafe
- Swift — declared Unsafe
- Sangath — declared Unsafe/Sub-standard
According to the FDA order, a copy of which lies with Onlykashmir.in, laboratory analysis detected findings including beta-sitosterol, vegetable fat and foreign fat, along with a positive Baudouin test and deviations in prescribed parameters such as Reichert-Meissl value, Polenske value, saponification value, B.R. reading, iodine value and fatty-acid profile.
Dealers ordered to pull affected stock
All food business operators, manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers and retailers have been directed to immediately stop dealing in the affected batches. The stock must be segregated and kept in safe custody and cannot be sold, transferred or otherwise dealt with without approval from the competent Food Safety Authority.
The concerned businesses have also been given 48 hours to submit complete stock details, including quantities received, sold/distributed and currently available. Violators face action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The order, issued by Khalid Jahangir, Commissioner, Food & Drugs Administration, J&K, is dated September 22, 2026. The FDA has described the measure as a precautionary action in the public interest while retaining the affected businesses’ statutory right to seek re-analysis through an FSSAI-notified referral laboratory.
