Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq delivered a special religious address at the historic Aastan-e-Aaliya Dastgeer Sahib shrine in Khanyar, Srinagar, on the occasion of the annual Urs Mubarak of Hazrat Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani, drawing a large gathering of devotees that included a significant number of women who turned out for what organisers described as a spiritually uplifting congregation at one of Kashmir’s most revered Sufi shrines.
In his address, the Mirwaiz centred his remarks on the concept of Tawheed, the absolute Oneness of Allah, framing it as the foundational message underpinning the teachings and enduring spiritual legacy of Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani. He recalled that the revered saint had consistently called upon believers to remain firmly attached to the Qur’an and Sunnah, to purify their hearts and souls, to pursue righteous conduct, and to place complete trust and reliance in Allah in all circumstances of life.
The Mirwaiz observed that at a moment when Muslim communities across the world continue to face severe challenges, uncertainty and difficult circumstances, the teachings associated with the saint’s legacy carry even greater relevance today. He urged the faithful gathered at the shrine to deepen their relationship with Allah through sincere prayer, genuine repentance, patience, steadfastness and unwavering faith, describing these qualities as essential anchors during periods of hardship and testing.
Extending the message beyond personal devotion, the Mirwaiz stressed that closeness to Allah must be reflected outwardly in conduct towards fellow human beings, calling on devotees to imbibe humility, compassion, self-purification, righteous character and service to humanity as values integral to the saint’s teachings. He emphasised that true spirituality lies not merely in ritual observance but in sincere devotion to Allah, adherence to His commandments, and following the path demonstrated by the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The gathering concluded with the Mirwaiz reciting a Manqabat in praise of Hazrat Peeran-e-Peer Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani, paying rich tribute to the saint’s enduring religious, spiritual and reformative contributions to the wider Muslim Ummah. The annual Urs at Dastgeer Sahib remains one of the most widely attended religious observances in the Kashmir Valley, drawing devotees from across the region each year to the Khanyar shrine.
