Delhi Public School, Srinagar, has added another sporting achievement to its record, with two of its young badminton players winning titles at the 53rd UT-Level Badminton Championship and earning places in the upcoming National-Level Badminton Championship.

The tournament was held at Police Stadium in Jammu from October 10 to 13, 2026, and brought together some of the best emerging talent from across the Union Territory. The students from the Srinagar school showed skill, determination and competitive spirit against strong opposition, and returned with top honours.

Yahya Ajaz of Class VI won the Under-13 title after a strong run against his opponents. Tarahum Sadiya of Class XI took the Under-15 title, relying on composure and tactical intelligence through the competition. Their victories reflect disciplined training and consistent effort, supported by the guidance of the school’s sports faculty. For a student in Class VI to win a UT-level title, and for another to do so while balancing the academic demands of Class XI, is a notable feat and says much about the structure of training available to young shuttlers in the Valley.

The school said the wins reaffirm its commitment to nurturing sporting talent alongside academic excellence. It pointed to well-equipped sports facilities, dedicated coaching and an environment that encourages students to explore their abilities and compete at higher levels. The success was celebrated by the school community, with teachers and students gathering in the auditorium to congratulate the champions.

Principal Shafaq Afshan said education extends far beyond the classroom and that the playing field is equally important in building resilience, discipline and the confidence to face challenges. “Our young badminton champions have demonstrated that excellence is achieved through perseverance, focus and sustained effort,” she said, adding that the school looks forward to watching them represent it with the same determination at the national level.

Chairman Vijay Dhar said sports play an invaluable role in shaping character, building confidence and nurturing leadership. “Their success is not merely a sporting accomplishment but also an inspiration to their peers, demonstrating what determination, discipline, and the right guidance can achieve,” he said, congratulating both champions and wishing them success as they prepare for the national event.

Badminton has grown steadily in popularity among young players in Jammu and Kashmir, and results at UT-level championships are increasingly seen as a pathway to national exposure. The qualification of two schoolchildren from Srinagar for the national championship will be watched with interest by the local sporting community, and is likely to encourage more students in the Valley to take up the sport seriously.
