The MP Office Baramulla on Tuesday handed over a bus to Government Degree College Uri under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), fulfilling a commitment made to students by Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid.
The students had raised the demand during the MP’s visit to the college at the time he was out on interim bail. They asked for a dedicated vehicle to ease transportation difficulties, which can be considerable for those travelling to the border town of Uri from surrounding villages. The bus has now been delivered, and the MP Office team inaugurated it in the presence of the college Principal, Abdul Majeed Chalkoo, and other staff members. The team was led by PA MO Baramulla Firdous Peerzada and District PRO Aijaz Lone.
AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi said the handover reflected Er. Rashid’s commitment to responding to genuine public demands and addressing the practical difficulties faced by students. “The students had personally requested Engineer Rashid to provide a bus for their college during his visit. Despite his continued incarceration, efforts were made through the MP Office Baramulla to fulfil that commitment. Today, the promise made to the students has been honoured,” he said.
In a separate welfare step, the MP Office also extended financial assistance to five families from Maya Bejhama in Uri, who suffered heavy losses in flash floods and landslides. The assistance fulfils a pledge made by the MP Office on behalf of Er. Rashid during a visit to the affected area last year, when it had promised to contribute one month’s salary towards relief for the families hit by the disaster. The amount has now been distributed to the five affected families in keeping with that promise.
Inam Un Nabi said educational support and help for families affected by natural disasters remain important public welfare concerns. He added that the MP Office continues to work towards honouring commitments made to people across the constituency, despite Er. Rashid’s continued incarceration.
Uri, which lies close to the Line of Control in the Baramulla constituency, has often seen communities cope with harsh terrain, landslides and seasonal flooding, and local infrastructure such as transport for students can make a visible difference in everyday life. Funds under MPLADS are meant to be used for community assets and local development needs identified by the people, and the bus falls squarely within that purpose.
Abrar Rashid, son of Er. Rashid, and Abrar Magriyar attended the programme, along with college officials and staff.
