Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU) Jammu and Kashmir has strongly condemned a reported incident of stone-pelting at a mosque in the Pehroo Sherbagh area of Anantnag, which occurred during Isha prayers and left worshippers injured and the mosque damaged.
Describing the incident as deplorable, the MMU said the miscreants responsible for the vandalism should be identified and arrested without delay, and punished according to law. The body called for a thorough probe so that those behind the attack are brought to justice and similar incidents are not repeated.
The Majlis stressed that the sanctity of places of worship must be respected at all times. It said any act of violence targeting worshippers or houses of prayer is unacceptable in any circumstances, particularly when it takes place during congregational prayers, when people are gathered peacefully in a state of devotion.
The MMU also underscored the need to preserve unity among the Ummah. It urged all concerned to exercise restraint and to resolve differences through peaceful means rather than resorting to violence and vandalism. In its view, internal disagreements within the community must never be allowed to escalate into physical confrontation, and every dispute should be addressed through dialogue and mutual respect.
Mosques hold a central place in the social and spiritual life of Kashmir, and any attack on a place of worship tends to draw swift reaction from religious bodies and civil society. Incidents involving injuries to worshippers carry added gravity, since they strike at the sense of safety that people expect when they gather for prayer. Religious organisations across the Valley have repeatedly appealed for calm and coexistence on such occasions, and the MMU’s statement follows that tradition.
The MMU is a coalition of religious scholars and organisations in Jammu and Kashmir that regularly issues statements on matters affecting the community. Its call in this case rests on two points: accountability for those who carried out the attack, and restraint from every side so that the situation does not deteriorate. Public attention will now turn to whether the authorities identify those involved and take action in accordance with the law.
The statement did not name any individual or group, and the circumstances that led to the incident remain to be established through investigation. The MMU urged that the facts be determined fairly and that the guilty face the consequences, while appealing to the public not to allow the episode to disturb harmony in the area.
