Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of Pune Metro projects worth around ₹21,800 crore on November 3 at 12:30 PM through video conferencing. He will also address the gathering on the occasion.

The Prime Minister will inaugurate Pune Metro Line 3, also known as the Pink Line, built at a cost of over ₹8,300 crore. Spanning approximately 23 kilometres, the corridor connects Maan to the District Court Metro station and links the Hinjewadi IT hub with Shivajinagar. It is expected to ease the daily commute of thousands of IT professionals and other commuters travelling to one of Pune’s major employment centres, and it will integrate with the existing metro network for seamless travel across the city.

The Pink Line carries a distinct social message. It will be operated entirely by women train operators, a first-of-its-kind initiative in gender-inclusive public transport. It also has a sustainability focus, with around 30 percent of its electricity needs envisaged to be met through solar power. Officials say the corridor will reduce dependence on private vehicles, ease traffic congestion and cut vehicular emissions, while improving access to major commercial and residential areas.

The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone of Phase-II of Pune Metro, estimated to cost around ₹13,500 crore. This phase comprises Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A, which will substantially expand the network across important residential, commercial and IT hubs.

Lines 2A and 2B together span around 12.75 kilometres. Line 2A will connect Vanaz to Chandani Chowk, while Line 2B will link Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi, extending the existing east-west corridor. Line 4, at around 25.52 kilometres, will run from Kharadi to Khadakwasla, and Line 4A, at 6.12 kilometres, will connect Nal Stop to Manik Baug.

Together, the new corridors will serve Kharadi, Magarpatta, Hadapsar, Swargate, Manik Baug, Nanded City, Pune Cantonment and Warje. The eastern extension from Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi will improve connectivity to the fast-growing residential, commercial and IT hubs of Kharadi and Wagholi. Interchange facilities at Swargate, Nal Stop and Kharadi Bypass will connect the corridors with intercity bus services and the existing metro network.

Pune has been among India’s fastest-growing urban centres, with a large student population and a dense technology workforce that has placed sustained pressure on its roads. Metro expansion has therefore become central to the city’s mobility planning. The twin events of a major inauguration and a large Phase-II foundation stone underline the Centre’s emphasis on integrated urban transport, and are expected to give commuters an efficient and connected network across the city.
