Jammu and Kashmir Bank has issued a notification for recruitment of 1356 posts, sparking a debate on the upper age limit and reservation policy. Political leaders, candidates and the public circles have demanded that the age limit be increased from 30 to 40 years.

The bank has invited applications for 323 Probationary Officer (PO) and 1033 Banking Associate posts. The online application process will start from November 7 and continue till November 26, while the exams will be conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). Candidates should be between 20 and 30 years of age as on January 1, 2026, however, age relaxation will be available for certain categories.

Under the reservation policy, 60% of the posts are reserved for specific categories and 40% for open merit. These include 20% for Scheduled Tribes, 10% for backward areas and economically weaker sections, 8.8% for Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes, and 4% for residents of LoC and areas bordering the International Border.

Public circles have also urged the bank management to review the upper age limit and bring it in line with the JKSSB’s prescribed standard of 40 years, keeping in mind the rising unemployment and the gap of about 6 years in recruitment.

Candidates say that in the previous recruitment, the age limit for PO posts was 32 years, which has now been reduced to 30 years. The selection of PO candidates will be through preliminary, main examination and interview, while an online examination will be conducted for Banking Associate posts. The dates of the examinations have not been announced yet.

Political reaction to Bank Conditions

PDP MLA Pulwama Waheedur Rehman Para questioned the age limit and said that this decision will exclude thousands of candidates from the recruitment process. He asked why the bank has fixed it at 30 years when the upper age limit in Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) is 40 years.
CPI(M) leader and MLA Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami appealed to review the age limit and make it as per the JKSSB norms in view of rising unemployment. PDP MLA Muntaz Mehdi also demanded that the age limit be increased to 40 years.
