Jammu/ Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use India’s strong diplomatic relations with key global players to help end the ongoing conflict in West Asia and alleviate the humanitarian suffering in the region.

He made these remarks while addressing the ongoing Budget Session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. He mentioned the escalating war in the Middle East that has affected the lives of millions of people in the region and beyond.

Highlighting the humanitarian toll of the conflict, the Chief Minister said that the global discourse often revolves around regime change, strategic issues like the Strait of Hormuz and rising oil prices, but the ongoing suffering and hardships of the people of Iran have not been given clear attention for the past several weeks.
He stressed that the crisis is also directly affecting India as many Indian citizens, including those from Jammu and Kashmir, are stranded in Iran. He also mentioned its impact within the country, such as long queues at petrol pumps and mental distress among the people.

“As representatives of the people, we have every right to raise our concerns in this House,” the Chief Minister said. He added that although the Assembly is not in a position to prevent war, India’s diplomatic status gives it a unique position to contribute towards peace.

Referring to India’s relations with the US, Israel, Iran and other regional powers, he expressed confidence in the central government’s ability to play a constructive role. He demanded that the Prime Minister be appealed to use these relations and personal diplomatic contacts to help bring about an early end to the conflict.

He further said that the end of the war would not only reduce the suffering of the people of the affected areas but would also pave the way for peaceful coexistence between countries.
The Chief Minister strongly condemned the war, calling it “an unjust and illegal war imposed on Iran” and expressed condolences for those who lost their lives in the conflict, including Ayatollah Khamenei and his associates.

The Chief Minister reiterated his appeal that the central government should make every effort to end the war as soon as possible and stressed that the sooner it ends, the greater the benefit for humanity.

He described the issue as a humanitarian crisis rather than a religious one, saying, “This is not the killing of any one religion, this is the killing of humanity.”
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly would support every meaningful effort made by India to end this dispute.
