The Zojila Tunnel, one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, is expected to revolutionize connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh by providing year round road access, significantly improving travel safety and boosting tourism and economic activity across the region.

Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) Chief Operating Officer Harpal Singh said the tunnel will eliminate the annual isolation caused by the closure of the Zojila Pass during winter months.

He said heavy snowfall and harsh weather conditions force the strategic mountain pass to remain shut for several months every year, disrupting movement between Kashmir and Ladakh. Once operational, the tunnel will ensure uninterrupted road connectivity regardless of weather conditions.

Singh also highlighted the safety benefits of the project, noting that the existing route over the pass is prone to accidents even during favourable weather. According to him, the tunnel will provide a safer and more dependable alternative, reducing risks for commuters and transport operators.

Beyond connectivity, the project is expected to generate substantial economic benefits. Improved access is likely to increase tourist arrivals and strengthen trade, creating opportunities for taxi operators, hotel owners, shopkeepers and other sectors linked to tourism and services.

Describing the recent tunnel breakthrough as a major construction milestone, Singh said it marks significant progress in the project, though considerable work remains. Construction activities are expected to continue through 2027 and 2028, with traffic likely to begin moving through the tunnel by the end of 2028.

He said the project is poised to become a game changer for both Kashmir and Ladakh, enhancing mobility, supporting economic growth and strengthening regional integration
