The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a PIL seeking directions to stop the circulation of allegedly derogatory videos and remarks against Prophet Muhammad made by influencer Nazia Elahi Khan.

A Bench of Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe observed that Article 32 could not be invoked in the matter and remarked that such petitions appeared to sensationalise issues.

The petitioner had sought guidelines to regulate offensive content targeting religious figures, removal of the alleged videos from social media platforms, and safeguards against content that could incite communal disharmony.

The Court also noted that existing legal remedies and the Information Technology Rules, 2009, are available.

The alleged remarks, made during a podcast in June, had gone viral and led to multiple FIRs against the influencer.

The Court had earlier declined an urgent hearing, advising the petitioner to pursue regular legal remedies.
