Srinagar, July 15: In a heart-rending incident, a woman from Tailbal area of Srinagar has died weeks after she was mauled by a dog inside the compound of her own home, triggering renewed public anger over the growing menace of stray dogs.
The deceased, wife of Mohamad Sidiq Bhat, was reportedly attacked in the backyard of her residence a few weeks ago. The dog is said to have inflicted severe bite injuries, leaving her critically wounded. Despite undergoing treatment, she succumbed to her injuries, leaving her family shattered and an entire neighbourhood in mourning.
The tragic death has sparked serious questions over the safety of ordinary citizens, particularly women, children and the elderly, who continue to face the threat of stray dog attacks even within the confines of their own homes.
Residents said the incident is a grim reminder of the worsening stray dog situation in Kashmir and urged the authorities to act before more innocent lives are lost.
The bereaved family has appealed to the administration to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure accountability while extending adequate support to victims of such attacks.
The incident has also reignited demands for a comprehensive strategy involving the administration, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, health authorities and animal welfare organisations to address the escalating stray dog menace without compromising public safety.
Official figures reveal the alarming scale of the crisis. More than 2.06 lakh dog-bite cases were reported across Jammu and Kashmir during 2024 and 2025, underscoring what health experts describe as a growing public health emergency linked to the increasing stray dog population.
With another precious life lost, citizens are asking a painful question: How many more families must suffer before effective and lasting measures are taken to protect human lives?
