A new digital postal remittance service linking Qatar and India, built on the PosTransfer platform powered by the Unified Payments Interface, has become operational through Qatar Post outlets, offering the large Indian community in Qatar a fast, secure and affordable channel for sending money home.
The service has been developed through collaboration between Qatar Post, India Post, the Universal Postal Union’s Interconnection Platform and NPCI International Payments Limited, the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India. By combining the extensive physical reach of postal networks in both countries with India’s digital public infrastructure, the initiative is designed to provide an efficient cross border remittance channel for the sizeable Indian diaspora resident in Qatar.
The service went live in Qatar on 15 August, coinciding with India’s Independence Day. To mark the occasion, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of India in Qatar, Sandeep Kumar, visited a Qatar Post outlet at LuLu Mall in Doha and interacted with stakeholders involved in rolling out the initiative, underscoring the significance officials attach to strengthening digital financial connectivity and bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Under the service, customers in Qatar can initiate a remittance at any participating Qatar Post outlet by providing the UPI identification of the intended recipient in India, along with required customer identification details. The recipient must activate the facility for receiving foreign inward remittances through their UPI application, after which the remitted amount is credited instantly to the beneficiary’s UPI enabled bank account. Transactions can be initiated for amounts ranging from ten to four thousand Qatari riyals, subject to a maximum equivalent of one lakh rupees per transaction, with a flat service charge applicable per transaction.
Officials describe the Qatar-India corridor as an important milestone in the modernisation of international postal financial services, demonstrating how postal networks and digital public infrastructure can together deliver inclusive, interoperable and efficient cross border financial services. India Post is understood to be working with postal operators in other countries to establish additional PosTransfer corridors powered by UPI, a move that could extend similar benefits to Indian diaspora communities across other major overseas markets in the coming months.
