Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah on Monday said that internal discipline and strict adherence to the party constitution form the true foundation of any organisation’s strength and success. He described the Naya Kashmir Manifesto, the party’s agenda and its Constitution as the organisation’s greatest assets, and said every person associated with the party carries a fundamental responsibility to follow them in letter and spirit.

Dr Farooq was addressing a special meeting of the Srinagar District Working Committee at the party headquarters, Nawa-e-Subah Complex. The gathering included all of the party’s legislators from the district. General Secretary Haji Ali Mohammad Sagar, Provincial President Showkat Ahmad Mir and Chief Spokesperson and Zadibal MLA Tanvir Sadiq attended, along with MLAs Haji Mubarak Gul (Eidgah), Shameema Firdous (Habba Kadal), Mushtaq Guroo (Chanapora), Salman Ali Sagar (Hazratbal) and Ahsan Pardesi (Lal Chowk). Political Advisor to the Chief Minister Mudassar Shahmiri, Minority Cell Convener Jagdish Singh Azad, Women’s Wing Provincial President Er Sabia Qadri, Provincial YNC President Mushtaq Mir and all block presidents were also present. District President Pir Afaq Ahmad organised the meeting.

The deliberations covered party activities across the district, organisational programmes, the problems confronting ordinary citizens, the pace of developmental works, and ways to energise the party at the grassroots. Participants also offered their own views and suggestions.

Urging office-bearers and workers to discharge their duties at every level in accordance with the Constitution, Dr Farooq invoked the legacy of party founder Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. He recalled the founder’s repeated emphasis on the principle that people are the source of power and that sovereignty belongs to the people, and asked workers to make it the bedrock of their political and organisational conduct.

The veteran leader also stressed the need to acquaint the younger generation with the history of Kashmir. Many young people today, he observed, are not fully aware of the circumstances the Kashmiri people have endured. He said they must understand the oppression, repression, exploitation, poverty, deprivation, helplessness and marginalisation suffered by the people, and how basic human and political rights were denied during the era of autocratic rule.

Directing workers to stay in close and continuous contact with the public, Dr Farooq said public service has always been the core objective of National Conference politics. Workers, he said, must stand with people in their hours of difficulty, raise their concerns at appropriate forums and work sincerely towards resolving them.

Turning to the present administration, he said the National Conference Government is functioning under extremely difficult circumstances within the Union Territory system and with severely limited powers, often having to operate “on the edge of a sword.” Despite these constraints, he said, the Government is using every available resource and its limited authority to deliver maximum relief to the people, improve basic amenities and carry the development process forward.
