Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today emphasized the need for locally adaptable implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, calling it a “visionary document” whose success depends on grassroots understanding and action.
Speaking at a one-day conference themed “Empowering Education Leaders for Holistic Education” at SKICC, the Chief Minister said five years into NEP-2020, it’s time to reflect, assess, and course-correct. He stressed that real transformation will only come when local contexts, languages, and inclusivity are prioritized in education reform.
Highlighting staff shortages and limited subject availability, especially in regional languages, he said the policy must be implemented within available resources but with intent and innovation. He also defended government teachers, especially those working in remote and harsh terrains like Gurez and Machil.
Abdullah praised students for showcasing innovative projects at the event, calling them proof of untapped talent hindered only by lack of exposure and opportunity.
He called for inclusive education, urging institutions to accommodate children with learning and physical challenges. He acknowledged the digital divide and affirmed that bridging it remains a government priority.
The event also saw a MoU signed between IUST and Directorate of School Education Kashmir, aimed at strengthening school-university partnerships. Other speakers included Education Minister Sakina Itoo, IUST VC Prof. Shakeel Romshoo, and Secretary Education Ram Niwas Sharma.
“Educators are not just instructors—they are nation builders,” Omar Abdullah concluded.
