Hopes for a resolution of the long-pending Ladakh statehood issue appear to have dimmed again, with Greater Kashmir reporting that negotiations may have encountered a significant political obstacle. The development comes even as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has been pressing New Delhi for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir itself — a parallel demand that has complicated the broader political landscape of the erstwhile state.

Ladakh was carved out as a separate Union Territory in August 2019, alongside J&K, when the Modi government revoked Article 370. Since then, tribal and political groups in the cold desert region — including the influential Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance — have sustained a vigorous campaign for full statehood, scheduled tribal status for Ladakhis, and a dedicated legislature for the UT.

The latest impasse, described as a “political speed-breaker,” comes at a particularly sensitive moment, with Eid-ul-Azha preparations under way and public attention overwhelmingly focused on the Budgam tragedy. Analysts note that the Centre has historically used occasions of regional distraction to defer politically sensitive decisions.

Both communities in Ladakh — Buddhists in Leh and Muslims in Kargil — have presented a rare unified front on the statehood demand. The failure to deliver a credible timeline continues to erode trust in New Delhi’s commitments to the region’s aspirations.
