Ladakh’s most prominent activist, Sonam Wangchuk, has announced that he will join a planned demonstration at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on June 6 if the central government fails to act on the demands raised by the Cockroach Janta Party by June 5. Among the key demands is the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The announcement marks a fresh escalation in Wangchuk’s long-running campaign for Ladakh’s rights and broader governance accountability. Wangchuk, who rose to international prominence as an innovator and education reformer before becoming a powerful voice for Ladakhi identity and self-governance, has repeatedly used strategic public action — including high-profile hunger strikes — to press his causes. His decision to set a deadline and attach his name to the Jantar Mantar protest adds significant weight to what might otherwise be a relatively low-profile demonstration.

The Cockroach Janta Party, which frames itself as a citizen accountability movement, has been campaigning on issues of educational governance. Wangchuk’s involvement — if it materialises — will bring national media attention to the protest and potentially widen its political resonance. The move also comes amid unresolved tensions over Ladakh’s status as a Union Territory without a legislature, a demand Wangchuk has championed consistently. With less than four days before the deadline, the ball now rests squarely in New Delhi’s court.
