June 3, 2026 – Srinagar: In a growing wave of public sector discontent, employee unions across Jammu and Kashmir have raised a powerful call for a substantial pay hike. The demand comes amid mounting inflation and a widening gap between wages and living costs. The state’s current salary structure, many employees argue, no longer reflects the economic realities they face.
At a press conference held in Srinagar’s Press Enclave, union leaders emphasized that decades-old salary scales have kept pace neither with inflation nor with the professional demands placed on government workers. “We serve the public at every level, and we deserve a wage that reflects our value,” stated Mushtaq Ahmad, a senior union representative.
The call for a pay revision has also garnered support from opposition parties, who argue that an overdue salary revision will boost morale and productivity. Analysts suggest that if the government acts swiftly, the move could stabilize a workforce that has often been a pillar of governance in the region.
As negotiations between the unions and the administration approach, both sides are hopeful that a compromise can be reached before the end of the month. Meanwhile, employees plan further demonstrations if their demands are not met.
