Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday described the newly signed Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the United States as a historic document and a message from a strong Iran, signalling Tehran’s determination to frame the agreement in terms of national sovereignty and diplomatic equality rather than capitulation to external pressure.

The MoU was signed by US President Donald Trump during a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the G7 Summit held at Versailles. Before signing the document, President Trump acknowledged that the deal had not been easy to reach, a statement that reflects the complex and extended negotiations that preceded the breakthrough. The signed agreement was subsequently shared with Tehran, where it received formal endorsement from President Pezeshkian.

Pezeshkian, in a social media post following the endorsement, said that peace can only be achieved through mutual respect. He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to global peace while emphasising that Iran would preserve its dignity, independence and capacity for regional cooperation. The framing is consistent with the position Tehran has maintained throughout the negotiating process: that any agreement must treat Iran as an equal party, not as a state under coercion.

French President Macron welcomed the development, saying the agreement paves the way for lasting peace and could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, helping ease global energy prices. The Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant proportion of the world’s oil trade passes, has been a persistent source of geopolitical tension, and any arrangement that reduces the risk of its closure would have immediate positive implications for global energy markets.

The significance of the deal extends well beyond the Iran-US bilateral relationship. A formalised MoU between Washington and Tehran, brokered partly through French diplomatic engagement at the highest levels, represents the most significant development in Iran-US relations in years and could reshape the strategic calculus across West Asia. For India, which imports oil from the region and has significant economic interests in Iran, the potential stabilisation of the Strait of Hormuz is of particular importance.
