Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan arrived at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh on Thursday, marking the beginning of his first official visit to Ladakh. He was given a warm welcome upon arrival by Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena along with other senior dignitaries.
The Vice President is scheduled to spend three days in the Union Territory of Ladakh, a visit that underscores the central government’s continued attention to this strategically important and ecologically sensitive region.
The highlight of the visit will be Vice President Radhakrishnan’s participation in the International Day of Yoga celebrations in Leh on June 21. The annual observance, championed by India on the international stage since the United Nations adopted the date in 2015 at the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, draws millions of participants across the country and the world. Leh, situated at high altitude and known for its stark natural beauty, makes for a distinctive and visually powerful setting for the event.
Ladakh, comprising the twin districts of Leh and Kargil, has been a Union Territory directly administered by the central government since the reorganisation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019. Since then, senior central leaders have made periodic visits to the region to participate in development reviews, national events, and engagements with local populations.
The Vice President’s presence for Yoga Day in Leh is expected to draw significant attention to the region and amplify the message of wellness, health, and peaceful living that the occasion represents. It also signals the importance the government places on ensuring that Ladakh remains integrated into national civic and cultural life at the highest levels of representation.
