Senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit has taken charge as Director of the Intelligence Bureau, India’s premier internal intelligence agency, succeeding Tapan Kumar Deka in a transition that brings to the helm an officer with deep, direct experience of Jammu and Kashmir’s security landscape.

A 1993-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, Dixit has been appointed for a two-year tenure after serving as Special Director within the IB. With more than three decades in intelligence and policing, he is widely regarded as one of the country’s most experienced intelligence officers, a reputation officials say weighed heavily in his elevation to the agency’s top post. His appointment comes as India continues to navigate a complex internal security environment shaped by terrorism, cyber threats, espionage, radicalisation and cross-border infiltration, challenges officials believe his extensive background positions him well to address.

Dixit’s connection to Jammu and Kashmir runs particularly deep. He played a key role in intelligence operations in the region during the sensitive period following the abrogation of Article 370, a phase that demanded careful coordination between intelligence and security agencies amid significant political and administrative change. As head of the Intelligence Bureau’s Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau in Srinagar, he supervised intelligence operations spanning Jammu and Kashmir as well as Leh, working in close coordination with security forces to maintain peace and counter terror threats across the Union Territory.

During his tenure in Kashmir, Dixit is credited with strengthening coordination among intelligence and security agencies operating in the Valley, closely monitoring militant networks, and supporting confidence-building measures aimed at stabilising the region. He is also recognised for encouraging greater public participation in the democratic process across Jammu and Kashmir, an effort officials describe as central to the broader normalisation push in the years following 2019.

Known within the security establishment for a calm, strategic approach and particular expertise in counter-terrorism and internal security matters, Dixit has handled several sensitive assignments over a distinguished career that has taken him through some of the country’s most security-critical postings. As IB Director, he will now lead the agency responsible for gathering and analysing intelligence on terrorism, extremism, espionage, cyber security and other threats to national security, with officials describing his appointment as a reflection of the government’s emphasis on experienced leadership at a time of evolving security challenges.
