Massive crowds gathered across Iran this week for the burial of the country’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the northeastern city of Mashhad, bringing to a close a week of mourning ceremonies that unfolded against the backdrop of renewed tensions with the United States following a fragile truce. Mourners lined the streets waving Iranian flags, holding placards bearing the late leader’s image and photographing the solemn proceedings as his remains were laid to rest.

The burial in Mashhad marked the final stage of an elaborate mourning period that saw Khamenei’s remains, along with those of four family members who died alongside him, carried in funeral processions through several of Iran’s most significant religious and political centres, including Tehran, Qom, Najaf and Karbala. At each stop, the processions drew enormous crowds who chanted Shia laments and revolutionary slogans, underscoring the depth of grief and reverence commanded by the man who had led the Islamic Republic for decades.

Marchers in Mashhad carried portraits of the late Supreme Leader and chanted slogans directed against United States President Donald Trump and other figures, reflecting the charged political atmosphere in which the funeral took place. The mourning period coincided with a period of heightened friction between Tehran and Washington, with the truce between the two sides remaining fragile even as the nation turned its attention to burying its longtime leader.

Khamenei’s death and the subsequent mourning have triggered a significant leadership transition within Iran’s clerical and political establishment, with the country now navigating questions of succession at a moment of considerable regional and international tension. The scale of public mourning witnessed across multiple Iranian cities, from the initial processions in Tehran to the final burial in Mashhad, reflected the central place Khamenei occupied in Iran’s political and religious life since assuming the position of Supreme Leader decades ago.

International observers have closely followed the developments in Iran, given the country’s pivotal role in regional geopolitics and its long standing tensions with the United States and Israel. The funeral proceedings, marked by both religious solemnity and open political messaging against Western adversaries, are likely to shape the tone of Iran’s foreign policy posture in the period ahead as a new leadership structure takes shape in Tehran.
