The inaugural International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir (IFFJK) 2026 has attracted an impressive international response, with 875 film submissions received from nearly 50 countries, highlighting the growing global interest in the Union Territory’s emerging cinematic landscape. The overwhelming participation marks a significant milestone for the region’s efforts to establish itself as a destination for filmmaking, cultural exchange and creative collaboration.
The submission window for the festival remains open until July 30, giving filmmakers one final opportunity to register their works for the maiden edition of the event. Organisers expect additional entries before the deadline, further strengthening the festival’s diverse international lineup.
Scheduled to take place from September 7 to 10, the four-day festival is being organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). The event is designed to provide a global platform for filmmakers while promoting Jammu and Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes and growing potential as a preferred destination for film production.
Officials believe the enthusiastic response from filmmakers across different continents reflects increasing confidence in Jammu and Kashmir’s evolving creative ecosystem. The participation of filmmakers from around 50 countries is expected to bring together a wide range of storytelling traditions, cinematic styles and artistic perspectives, making the festival a truly international cultural event.
The festival programme will include screenings of selected films alongside interactive sessions, masterclasses, panel discussions and cultural events. These activities are expected to facilitate meaningful interaction among filmmakers, industry professionals, students and cinema enthusiasts, encouraging knowledge-sharing and future collaborations within the global film fraternity.
Beyond showcasing films, the festival aims to strengthen artistic excellence, encourage cinematic innovation and foster greater cultural understanding through the universal language of cinema. It also seeks to highlight the traditions, history and creative identity of Jammu and Kashmir before an international audience while promoting friendship and cooperation among people from different nations.
The foundation for the festival was laid during its curtain raiser ceremony held on July 17, when Chief Minister Omar Abdullah officially launched the first edition of the International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir. On the occasion, he invited filmmakers, producers, artists and cinema enthusiasts from across the world to participate in what is envisioned as a landmark cultural initiative that could position Jammu and Kashmir prominently on the global cinema map.
