The latest CAG report has expressed serious concern over the deteriorating environmental condition of Dal and Wular Lakes.

According to the report, the open area of Dal Lake has decreased from 15.40 sq km in 2007 to 91.12 sq km in 2020, a decrease of more than 10%. The main reasons for this are encroachment, untreated sewage and increased human activities.

Meanwhile, Wular Lake is also shrinking due to encroachment and siltation, which is affecting its ability to absorb flood water.

The report revealed that 315 water reservoirs in Jammu and Kashmir have been completely depleted while many others are severely affected.

The report also questioned poor management, delayed projects and under-utilization of funds and stressed the need for urgent action, otherwise the water and environmental problems in the region may become more serious.
