Srinagar, Apr 18: Park Hospital Mohali on Saturday said it has successfully completed over 100 robotic joint resurfacing surgeries for patients from Srinagar, with a reported success rate of 95 to 99 percent in knee and hip replacements.

Addressing a press conference at a local hotel in Srinagar, Dr Bhanu Pratap Singh, Director Orthopaedics and Robotic Joint Replacement Surgery, along with Dr Anil Kapoor, said India is witnessing a sharp rise in osteoarthritis cases, with knee osteoarthritis prevalence estimated between 22 to 39 percent. He noted that over 2.5 million knee replacement procedures are performed annually in the country, growing at one of the fastest rates globally.

Dr Singh said robotic knee replacement surgery, powered by 3D augmented reality and artificial intelligence, is now performed within 12 to 15 minutes through small incisions of around 3.5 to 4 inches, with no requirement for blood transfusion, sutures, or drains. Patients are mobilised within four hours, can climb stairs the next day, and achieve full recovery within 7 to 10 days.

He added that robotic surgery offers customised implant positioning based on individual anatomy, more accurate bone cuts and alignment, preservation of healthy tissue, reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain and faster rehabilitation.

Dr Bhanu Pratap Singh said India’s medical tourism sector is expanding rapidly, with 6.3 million foreign patients visiting in 2024 and the industry likely to reach 13 billion US dollars by 2026. He said treatment costs in India remain significantly lower compared to the US and Europe while maintaining international standards. He also highlighted improved connectivity to Chandigarh through multiple daily flights and Vande Bharat and Shatabdi train services.

The doctors said patients from Jammu, Srinagar, Agra, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Panipat, Sonipat, Karnal, Jalandhar, Kota, Pune and Nagpur, as well as from countries such as Dubai, Canada, Australia and the US, are visiting Mohali for robotic joint procedures.

Sharing clinical trends, Dr Singh noted a post Covid surge in hip-related complications, including avascular necrosis linked to steroid use, with some patients requiring total hip replacement.

On the occasion, Mr Ashish Chadha, Group CEO North, said Park Hospital Mohali is empanelled with ECHS, CGHS, ESI, Ayushman Bharat, Haryana Government, Himachal Government and major TPAs. He added that the hospital is equipped with advanced robotic systems including Robo Suite, Robo HD, Robo Eye and Robo Arm, ensuring high precision and superior outcomes.

The hospital also announced that free robotic technology will be offered to patients from Srinagar till May 31, aiming to make advanced healthcare accessible, while noting that Chandigarh is emerging as a preferred destination for advanced medical treatment for patients from Kashmir.
