Jammu and Kashmir Police in Anantnag have registered cases against seven individuals under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act as part of an intensified anti-drug campaign across the district, with enforcement actions carried out in Bijbehara and Kokernag on Monday.

In Bijbehara, police acting in coordination with a medical team conducted drug testing using Rapid Drug Detection Kits at select locations. Five individuals who tested positive for drug consumption were taken into custody and booked under Sections 8 and 27 of the NDPS Act. The persons identified include Ghulam Nabi Hajam of SICOP Bijbehara, Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh of Tak Mohalla Bijbehara, Waseem Ahmad Dhobi of Badroo Srigufwara, Showkat Ahmad Sheikh of Sheikh Mohalla Bijbehara, and Sartaj Ahmad Chori Saz of SICOP Bijbehara. Separate FIRs have been registered for each individual, numbered 165 through 169 of 2026.

In a separate line of action, Police Station Kokernag received credible intelligence regarding two individuals behaving suspiciously at different locations in its jurisdiction. Both were apprehended and subjected to medical examination. Their test reports returned positive for drug consumption. Accordingly, Tanveer Ahmed Malik of Zalangam was booked in FIR No. 75/2026 and Subair Ahmed Tantry, also of Zalangam, was booked in FIR No. 76/2026, each under Sections 8 and 27 of the NDPS Act. Investigation in both cases is ongoing.

The deployment of Rapid Drug Detection Kits has proven to be an effective operational tool for law enforcement in identifying active users, allowing police and health teams to work in a coordinated framework that links immediate enforcement with a broader public health dimension of the drug problem.

Anantnag district has witnessed a disturbing rise in drug abuse cases in recent years, with heroin and diverted pharmaceutical products featuring prominently among the substances being consumed. The impact on young people and working-age individuals has placed additional strain on families and communities. Monday’s enforcement activity underscores that Anantnag Police remain in active pursuit of both suppliers and consumers as part of a multi-pronged approach to containing the narcotics problem.
