Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday expressed profound grief over a tragic road accident in Pahalgam that claimed two lives and left six others injured, directing authorities to ensure immediate medical care for the survivors and all necessary assistance to the families of the deceased.
The accident, which occurred in the scenic Pahalgam area of South Kashmir, has sent shock waves across the region. Pahalgam, a major tourist hub in the Anantnag district, witnesses considerable vehicular movement throughout the year, particularly during the summer months when the area draws visitors from across India and abroad. Road accidents in the mountainous terrain of Kashmir remain a persistent concern, with narrow roads, sharp turns, and unpredictable weather conditions posing year-round risks.
Expressing his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Chief Minister prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls and called upon the Almighty to grant the grieving families the strength and courage to bear the irreparable loss. Abdullah also prayed for a swift and complete recovery of those injured in the accident.
Showing active concern for the injured, the Chief Minister issued directions to the concerned authorities to ensure that all those undergoing treatment receive the best possible medical care without any delay. He also instructed the district administration and relevant departments to extend every form of assistance and support to the families affected by the tragedy.
This is not the first time Abdullah has personally intervened to direct swift government action in the wake of accidents. Since assuming office, the Chief Minister has consistently underscored the importance of responsive governance, particularly in moments of public grief and emergency. His administration has also been reviewing road safety measures across the union territory, with emphasis on accident-prone stretches in hilly districts.
Road safety activists and civil society members in Kashmir have long called for more robust enforcement of traffic regulations in interior and mountainous areas, improved road maintenance, and faster emergency response infrastructure. Tuesday’s accident is a grim reminder of the work that remains to be done.
The government has been urged by local representatives to expedite the installation of crash barriers, improve signage, and enhance medical facilities in areas like Pahalgam and surrounding regions where accident fatalities have historically been higher.
