The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has retained its position as India’s highest-ranked institution in the QS World University Rankings 2027, climbing five places from its previous year’s position to secure the 118th spot globally. The ranking matches the highest-ever position achieved by any Indian university in the prestigious QS index, underlining IIT Delhi’s consistent push toward global academic excellence.

The QS World University Rankings 2027, released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, also highlights a broader surge in India’s presence on the global higher education map, with 52 Indian universities featuring in the rankings, reflecting the country’s growing academic output, research activity and international faculty and student exchange.

Beyond IIT Delhi, several other premier Indian institutions also performed strongly. IIT Bombay secured the 134th position globally, followed by IIT Madras at 170th, IIT Kharagpur at 205th and IIT Kanpur at 221st. The clustering of multiple Indian institutions in the top 250 is a significant indicator of the system-level improvement that has taken place across India’s elite technical education sector over the past several years.

IIT Delhi’s rise to 118th marks its second consecutive year at the top of the Indian rankings in this index. The institute has been investing in research infrastructure, international collaborations and faculty development, and has been particularly active in building industry linkages and translating academic research into practical applications.

The QS rankings evaluate institutions across a range of parameters, including academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty-student ratio, international faculty and international students. IIT Delhi’s performance across these metrics, particularly in employer reputation where it has traditionally ranked among the strongest Indian institutions, has been a consistent driver of its global standing.

The achievement will reinforce both government and institutional investment in the IIT system, which has been the subject of considerable debate in recent years regarding its funding, expansion and the balance between quality and scale.
