At least 14 students lost their lives and several others sustained injuries after a devastating fire tore through a coaching centre housed in a three-storey commercial building in Lucknow’s Aliganj area on Monday, sending shockwaves across the country and prompting urgent calls for accountability in the regulation of such establishments.
The blaze erupted inside the institute premises and spread with alarming speed, trapping dozens of students who had gathered for their classes. The building, which also housed a gaming zone and retail showrooms, proved dangerously ill-equipped to handle a fire emergency of this scale, with no adequate means of escape for those trapped on the upper floors. Rescue personnel reached the spot and mounted operations to evacuate survivors, but the death toll climbed steadily as the magnitude of the tragedy became clear.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath personally visited the fire site and later called on the injured at the hospital, interacting directly with victims and their families. He ordered a high-level probe into the incident, signalling that the administration intended to pursue accountability for the failures of fire safety and building compliance that allowed such a catastrophe to unfold. Questions are now being raised about whether proper fire exits, safety equipment, and structural compliance norms had been followed in a building that catered to a large number of young students on a daily basis.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her deep anguish over the loss of lives, calling the incident extremely sad and extending her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The President also prayed for the swift recovery of those who sustained injuries in the tragedy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his grief, announcing concrete financial support for the victims. He stated that an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund would be provided to the next of kin of each person who died in the fire, while the injured would each receive Rs 50,000 in financial assistance. Modi also confirmed that rescue operations were underway and that all possible assistance was being extended by the authorities.
The tragedy has reignited longstanding concerns about the safety standards prevalent in privately run coaching centres across India’s major cities, many of which operate in cramped commercial buildings without adequate fire safety infrastructure. Regulatory bodies and local civic authorities are now expected to face intense scrutiny over their oversight of such establishments, particularly as the nation mourns the loss of young lives cut short in what was supposed to be a place of learning.
