The long-debated reservation bill for women failed to secure the required votes in the Lok Sabha on Friday. The bill was introduced under the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, but it failed to get the required majority. The proposed law received 298 votes in favour and 230 against.
Two other bills, including the Delimitation Bill 2026 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill 2026, also failed to pass.
The two bills related to delimitation and increase in the number of seats, which were introduced in the Lok Sabha, were not put up for voting because, according to the central government, they were “essentially connected” with the legislation related to women’s reservation.
The bill was introduced after heated debate and heated exchanges on Thursday night and Friday. Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly advocated for 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Home Minister Amit Shah also accused the opposition of opposing the bill.
