General NS Raja Subramani formally assumed charge as India’s third Chief of Defence Staff on Sunday, taking over from General Anil Chauhan, who completed a tenure of three and a half years in the top tri-services post. The transition marks a significant moment in India’s defence architecture, with the CDS role serving as the principal military adviser to the Defence Minister and the apex body for joint operations coordination.

General Subramani, who previously served as Vice Chief of Army Staff, is widely expected to accelerate the ongoing theatrisation of India’s armed forces — a long-pending structural reform that seeks to integrate the Army, Navy, and Air Force under unified operational commands. His appointment comes at a particularly sensitive time, with India navigating an active post-Operation Sindoor security environment along its northern and western frontiers, as well as continued pressure from militant groups in Jammu & Kashmir. The appointment signals continuity and institutional resolve in India’s defence posture.
