Thursday, June 4, 2026  –  India’s air defence network has taken a significant leap forward with the induction of its fourth S-400 Sudarshan squadron, delivered by Russia under the landmark 2018 agreement worth approximately $5.43 billion. Defence sources indicated the system arrived in the country a few days ago and is expected to be deployed in an operational area in the near future, marking the fourth of five squadrons contracted under the India-Russia deal.

The induction is expected to form part of the broader Sudarshan Chakra concept — a unified network combining imported and indigenous assets designed to counter drones, ballistic missiles, and emerging hypersonic threats. The timing is strategically pointed: India’s borders remain tense and the S-400 has already proven its mettle in real-world conditions. With four squadrons now in place, the fifth and final unit under the current contract is anticipated by late 2026, underscoring India’s commitment to modernising its air defence architecture amid evolving regional security dynamics.

Alongside the Russian deliveries, India is also accelerating its indigenous Project Kusha programme — a DRDO-led long-range air defence system with an engagement range of up to 400 km, expected to enter service around 2028. The Defence Acquisition Council has also cleared a proposal for five additional S-400 squadrons, with discussions continuing with Moscow. The message is unambiguous: India intends to build one of Asia’s most formidable aerial shields.
