Kashmir Valley’s centuries-old traditions of cultural harmony, religious tolerance, and the enduring spirit of Kashmiriyat were vividly reflected on Monday as thousands of devotees gathered at the sacred shrine of Mata Kheer Bhawani in Tulmulla to participate in the annual Jyeshtha Ashtami Mela. Amid prayers and devotion, devotees sought peace, prosperity, brotherhood, and the well-being of humanity.
The revered shrine resonated with an atmosphere of deep spirituality, faith, and mutual affection throughout the day. Pilgrims began arriving in the early hours of the morning, filling the temple premises with the sounds of hymns, prayers, and sacred rituals. With folded hands and hearts full of devotion, worshippers paid obeisance to Mata Ragnya Bhagwati and prayed for lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in Kashmir and across the world.
While the Kheer Bhawani Mela is among the most significant religious gatherings of the Kashmiri Pandit community, it is equally cherished as a powerful symbol of Kashmir’s composite culture and the timeless ethos of Kashmiriyat, which unites people beyond the boundaries of religion and community.
This year, too, the Mela witnessed countless heartwarming and emotional moments that rekindled memories of a shared past. Local Muslims warmly welcomed visiting Kashmiri Pandit pilgrims, while neighbours, childhood friends, and long-lost acquaintances embraced one another after years of separation. Their tearful reunions, affectionate conversations, and shared smiles reflected the true essence of Kashmiriyat, rooted in love, mutual respect, trust, and a common cultural heritage.
At several places, Muslims and Kashmiri Pandits could be seen sitting together, reminiscing about old times, exchanging memories, and expressing hope for a future marked by peace and harmony. These touching scenes conveyed a powerful message: that the true strength of Kashmir lies in its diversity, its unity, and the enduring bonds that connect its people.
Visitors observed that the Kheer Bhawani Mela is not merely a religious event but also a heartfelt celebration of the Valley’s rich cultural legacy and shared history. They expressed hope that the bonds of affection, brotherhood, and communal harmony displayed during the festival would continue to grow stronger with each passing year.
The administration made comprehensive arrangements to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the annual fair. Adequate provisions for security, healthcare, sanitation, traffic management, and other essential services were put in place, drawing appreciation and satisfaction from the visiting devotees.
The annual Kheer Bhawani Mela at Tulmulla once again stood as a shining testament to the enduring spirit of Kashmiriyat. It reaffirmed that Kashmiriyat is not merely an idea or a slogan, but a living and breathing cultural tradition that continues to unite hearts through love, compassion, tolerance, mutual respect, and a shared sense of belonging.
