Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday reviewed the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) across Jammu and Kashmir and stressed the need for timely completion of rural road and bridge projects to strengthen connectivity in remote areas of the Union Territory.

Chairing a high-level review meeting in Srinagar, the Chief Minister assessed the progress achieved under various phases of the flagship rural roads programme and took stock of ongoing and newly sanctioned works. The review comes at a time when improved road connectivity is being viewed as a key driver of economic growth, social inclusion and access to essential services in rural Jammu and Kashmir.

Senior officials from the Public Works Department, Forest Department and other concerned agencies participated in the meeting, where discussions focused on accelerating execution, resolving bottlenecks and ensuring quality standards in infrastructure development.

The Chief Minister underscored that road connectivity remains one of the most critical components of rural development. Better roads not only improve transportation but also provide easier access to education, healthcare facilities, markets and government services. For many villages located in mountainous and far-flung regions, road connectivity serves as the primary link to the outside world and directly impacts economic opportunities and quality of life.

During the meeting, officials presented a detailed overview of the progress achieved under different phases of PMGSY and outlined plans for completing pending projects. Particular attention was given to works facing delays because of statutory clearances, land-related issues and procedural requirements.

Abdullah directed departments to strengthen coordination mechanisms and address pending issues on priority so that project execution is not affected. He also stressed the importance of regular monitoring at all levels to ensure that projects adhere to approved timelines and quality benchmarks.

The Chief Minister reviewed preparations for PMGSY-IV and instructed officials to expedite groundwork for the next phase of implementation. He highlighted the need to extend reliable all-weather connectivity to eligible rural habitations, especially those situated in border belts and difficult terrain where infrastructure gaps continue to affect daily life.

The renewed focus on PMGSY is expected to provide momentum to rural infrastructure development across Jammu and Kashmir. With hundreds of habitations dependent on improved connectivity for economic and social progress, the government’s emphasis on timely execution is likely to play an important role in strengthening development outcomes across the region.
